www.supportingartists.com is an exciting new website portal designed
to supply existing and prospective supporting artists with career
– boosting advice including industry updates, who’s
new on the scene and all the latest gossip! For an introductory
fee of just £5 per month subscribers will be able to have
their CV’s made available to casting agents and industry
professionals who may be looking for supporting artists for upcoming
projects.

WHAT IS A SUPPORTING
ARTIST?
Film and TV production involves a huge variety of talent, but
for many, the unsung heroes are the often unnamed supporting artists
who make each scene seem more ‘real’. Also known as
extra’s, TV extra and background artists, supporting artists
are drawn from all walks of life and professions – although
for some it can be a full time occupation.

NEW LEGISLATION
We recently spoke to a representative at the Department of Employment
about the latest legislation being brought in to protect prospective
supporting artists from the numerous scams that have operated
in the industry. From April 2004 it is illegal for an agency to
charge upfront fees with no guarantee of employment. According
to the spokesman: “Various dubious extras agencies advertised
in the trade press and in local press have been one of the worst
areas for people to get ripped off”.
